Fare (Fair) prices

Train Operator since 2003's picture

Instead of charging by distance traveled I suggest BART charge by time like this:

$5 three hours

$5 all day for seniors

$15 all day (gates open to station close)

$15 Lost ticket (It's still your responsibility to have your ticket)

$20 weekends (gates open Saturday to Station close Sunday)

$40 Seniors/Disabled per month ($5 one time fee for the neck lanyard required to be displayed for ADA seats comes with Photo ID and emer medical info/phone #'s)

$50 week (Gates open Monday to Station close Friday)

$180 Monthly pass (gates open 1st day of the month till Station close at the end of the month)

This would reduce a lot of the B.S. and demagnitized issues and encourage the campers to camp elsewhere.

i like the concept, but i

i like the concept, but i think some of the prices are too steep in relation to current prices.

1) $5 is a bit steep for 3 hours, because for most people that would only consist of one trip. i suppose it would be great for someone that needs to go for a quick round trip, but those out and back runs are likely the exception, not the rule (except for drug dealers, maybe). $5 would not only increase the fare for someone taking a short trip, but even for someone with a longer commute like myself (currently $4.50).

2) all week needs to be cheaper than $50. once again, $50 will me more expensive than most people already pay to commute all week, and it doesn't offer a discount over your proposed $5 "one way" fare. not including parking, my weekly commute currently costs $45.

3) a $180 monthly pass would only be advantageous to people commuting from very distant stations - like pittsburg to montgomery. and that is assuming they need to come to the office every single weekday. if they are out traveling even two days a month, they will be financially better off paying for their current per-trip ticket.

the $20 weekend pass would be great for visitors to the area and i think the senior ideas are great too.

I'm all for the monthly

I'm all for the monthly pass. The Muni fast pass is $45 - good within the city only. My commute comes out to $146 per month. I think if you deduct the commuter check discount it would come out to a nice discounted price.

My daily round trip is

My daily round trip is $14.10 (3 days a week I have to drive in on the weekends) making my monthly bart donation $169.20. A monthly pass giving me any kind of a price break would be nicely welcomed.

Wow! I thought I had it bad

Wow! I thought I had it bad paying $11.20 a day. Good thing you don't have to pay that 5 days a week

Good concept. Making BART

Good concept. Making BART prices more reasonable would probably double, maybe even triple ridership. Riding BART is supposed to be a no-brainer decision versus driving. Right now, it's not.

Making the prices more reasonable would encourage more people to ride BART, which would take more cars off the road, which eases congestion, and emissions. So not only would BART help the bay, it would help the planet. Because I feel BART should be moving way more than 300,000 people a day.

I like the concept. But that

I like the concept.

But that is a kinda steep rate hike..

What about people (like me) who are currently paying $3.40 each way twice a day? (Berkeley to Downtown SF)

That makes the daily commute $10/day instead of $6.80
and the weekly commute $50 instead of $34.00

I do like the Idea, but it needs some adjustments.

( a 31 Day Transbay bus pass on AC-Transit is only $116.00 )

Hey, it was just a gas bubble

Hey, it was just a gas bubble in my head, feel free to fine tune the concept.

Personally I feel public transportation should be free like sidewalks and parking tickets. Just add the cost to state taxes and spread the love to everybody,

On the surface, having free

On the surface, having free public transportation sounds like a great idea, but I think having fees also keeps the bums and the roudy teenagers out too....

I hear people came to hate

I hear people came to hate the "spare the air" days because of all the kids and bums clogging up bart. If I'm wrong about the kids and bums on those days, then please let me know.....

boopiejones's picture

no, you are totally right.

no, you are totally right. spare the air days always suck ass. they are the public transportation equiavalent of cinco de mayo and st. paddys day - amateur night. you are pretty much guaranteed on both spare the air and paddys/el cinco that multiple douchebags are going to bump into you, someone will spill a drink on you and chances are, you'll get home and discover someone elses barf or piss on your shoes.

I have come across some

I have come across some individuals with these characteristics. They were talking big-headed and using profanity on how they weren't scared of going to jail. But when two cops in uniform boarded the train, their behavior changed in the blink of an eye. I was trying my best not to laugh, but at the same time I was sad. What could have caused these individuals to behave so negatively? There has to be a reason.

How is BART going to move

How is BART going to move more than 300,000 people a day with the current amount of cars they have? bums and rowdy kids will always be on BART during certain hours; most of them usually don't pay anyway so they could care less what the fare is. i wish there were more officers on the platforms and on the trains to combat the "negative" behavior and acts such as spitting off the platform and relieving oneself while on the platform. Some of these people are so stupid and drunk, they literally fall into the train.

Why can't they just install more appropriate fare gates?

And move the bike/emergency exits over by the station agents so people are less likely to abuse them.

"Spare the Air" days were

"Spare the Air" days were only bad because they were infrequent.
If BART was free all the time the ridership wouldn't be like that.

Libraries, for example, are always "free" and when's the last time there was a run on books at one?

Free BART would be bad..

Free BART would be bad.. People you would not want on the trains would spend more time there. Also you would have to tax more to pay for it. I believe that those that use BART should pay for BART.

I am one of those that think $1 for parking is a steal. Seriously $1, 24 hours. It should be market price. All of us should set the price.. And priced at the 90% full mark at 10 am.

Master Chief's picture

I walk to BART. Cheap parking

I walk to BART.
Cheap parking doesn't help me at all.

And if you really believe that those that use BART should pay for BART then maybe station agents need to start cracking down on flagrant fare evaders.
I have never once been asked to show my ticket on BART, but on Muni officers come through and ask to see tickets all the damn time.

In the Downtown Berkeley station I've seen dozens of people hop past the bombed-out "FREE BIKE PARKING" hippie shack and go down those stairs to evade having to pay their fare share, and nothing is ever done about it.

when have the fees ever kept

when have the fees ever kept the bums and rowdy teenagers out? do you ever ride bart?
