I believe they're trained to sniff for bombs and explosives, and perhaps also drugs.
Mine is trained to sniff out
Mine is trained to sniff out explosives and bad guys. Although, a few times he has been interested in the pockets of a few riders. I can only presume he was sorting through the odors of someones dope while trying to decide if it is an odor he knows as explosives.

When I looked at the ingredients of Scooby Snacks, there were too many that I couldn't even pronounce. I give him the "P-Nuttier" bones from "Old Mother Hubbard". They seem to have good enough ingredients for humans.

First of all, I am no expert
First of all, I am no expert canine handler. I'm sure my teammates will vouch for that. So here is what I know.
I have heard a lot of different ideas of what the dogs look for when searching for hidden bad guys. Skin flakes, body odor, fear, plants or grasses disturbed by the fleeing suspect. However, the most common sense explanation I have been told is they find an odor that is different than the surrounding area.
As for dope and explosives, we can teach them the specific ingredients to look for through repetition.

People on METH who have been up for too long will sweat out ammonia as a byproduct of the chemicals in their system, fatigue, and being dehydrated. Generally they end up smelling like old socks.
