Is BART Too Dangerous?

I live in San Francisco and reverse-commute every day to the Hayward station which is close to my job. Since I started, there have been three shootings (one fatal). The first that I am aware of occured just twenty minites after I got onto the SF/Daly City line. Last night, there was a fatal stabbing outside the Fruitvale station AND shooting at Daly City. Is the BART too dangerous an option for commuters?

This topic has been covered many many many times.

If you are a commuter during rush hour you have nothing to worry about (safety in numbers).

If you are on the last train and nobody is around, act accordingly, ride the first car near the Train Operator. etc. etc. etc. etc.

In general, I don't think so.

In general, I don't think so. I know this is un-P.C. to say, but the black and Latino thugs seem to generally target other black and latino youth and act as if anyone else doesn't exist. As a middle-aged white guy, they've never bothered me. Then again, I would have no reason to go to the West Oakland, Fruitvale, 16th and Mission stations, etc. Just as a precaution, I carry pepper spray but have never in 8 years of riding BART had any occasion to feel remotely like I had to use it (though there were times I *wanted* to but that's a different story).

Careful with pepper spray. I

Careful with pepper spray.

I had to use it a year ago after I got sucker-punched from behind at a bar.

The person then turned around and pressed charges saying he never touched me. The DA believed him.

so far it has cost me 5k to deal with the bullshit...

Is BART to dangerous? Do wild

Is BART to dangerous?

Do wild bears shit in the woods?

I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons of your own safety and how important it is for you to use BART rather than walk to work or where ever you have to go.

Ask yourself about the recent killing of Oscar Grant at Fruitvale Station. Do you want to be locked into a small space with 10 or 15 drunk and stoned hoodlums going at it with each other and the Police afraid to respond because one of them might fuck up and kill a drunk ganster family man out for a good time, pilaging and plundering innocent people? My answer would have to no. I prefer to drive than get on BART with all the rif raf and bullshit going on these days.

Driving is almost always

Driving is almost always faster, too, unless you're doing a commute from the East Bay to downtown SF at rush hour.

Driving sucks but you can

Driving sucks but you can listen to your own radio
Not worry about getting mugged
or setting next to a stinko
or getting stuck in a tunnel
or stopping to get coffee if you want
or talking on the cell
or farting
or having to walk 3/4 of a mile to your work location after your train ride
or get panhandled
or shot...........

The only good thing about BART is.......
Well, you can.....
or you can.....
Ok, I'm not sure there is anything good about riding BART

I'll just continue to drive

Good things about Bart: No

Good things about Bart:

No traffic accidents
A tenth of the cost of driving
Can read / watch movies / whatever while riding

Not nearly as long a list as the benefits of driving, but I'll take it. I had to drive into the city all last week, and I was sick of it by the third day. Even getting to sing to my radio only goes so far.

Maybe if I could afford to drive a luxury car instead of a 10 year old economy car I'd feel differently.

You're almost 100 times more

You're almost 100 times more likely to be injured or killed in a car accident than by commuting with BART. Just stay clear of others, ride safely, and you're set. It's not like people are hanging around stations waiting for you to come out so they can shoot or stab you.

Besides, did the incident you mentioned come to your attention only because it happened on/near a BART station? How many similar incidents happen in the Bay Area every day? Shootings and stabbings happen everywhere, all the time. If you worry because of things like that, it might be better to stay home, board up your windows and doors, and hide in the basement.

This is true. However, there

This is true.

However, there is still the thing with having to set with people coughing on you or worse and poor hygiene.

I like my car! That doesn't mean that if you like BART you should be afraid.

The biggest plus to driving

The biggest plus to driving is that in the event of a large earthquake you will have shelter and a means of transportation, even though some roads may be out of service. I'm willing to bet that BART has no contingency plan for what to do if passengers are on a train in the event of a large earthquake, and even more willing to bet you'll just be kicked off the trains and left to fend for yourself and, when that happens, Oakland is *not* a place I would want to be. If you are in your car, you'll at least be likely able to get out of Oakland and go somewhere safer.

Someone please correct me if

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, BUT I believe BART had little or no damage after the Loma Prieta eathquake in 1989. I was not an employee at the time but I heard operations were delayed a minimal amount of time for track inspections and then BART ran 24/7 for quite a while after the quake.

If there is a big enough earthquake to crumble BART trackways, I think you might have more to worry about than your commute.

My two cents.
