OAKLAND — A 42-year-old man was shot to death during a robbery on his way to work Saturday morning in Oakland's Fruitvale district, police said.

As part of his usual morning routine, Gustavo Martinez, a father of four, set out to walk the several blocks from his apartment to the Fruitvale BART station about 6:15 a.m. to catch the train to Walnut Creek for his Saturday shift, where he had a construction job. He usually called his wife from the train to tell her he was safely on his way, police said.

But when he reached the 1300 block of 33rd Avenue, within sight of the station, at least one person approached him, robbed him of valuables including a small amount of cash, and shot him more than once, police said.

Officers and paramedics arrived, and took Martinez to Highland Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Where are the protesters ?

Forums:

While a professional protester/tree sitter gets hit with a tear gas cannister in the noggin in Gaza, his colleagues shut down Montgomery St. in SF...there's complete silence on the death of a hard working man trying to shelter and feed his family. A robbery that may have netted only $20.00. Where's the outrage?

BTW - I like the connection - robbed enroute to the Fruitvale BART Station. The poor man was walking and robbed on an Oakland city street, it had nothing to do with BART!

What are you talking about? It happened within 5 miles of a station, there must be a connection. Maybe it was a white BART off duty cop. Wait, I need to see if the victim was some sort of minority before I point out race. THEN there will be outrage.

If the robber was some minority there won't be any outrage. Everyone expects it.

According the story, the victim was walking to Fruitvale BART and was with in eyesight of the station.

While true is has nothing to do with BART, it it related to a long list of other posts about crime around the Fruitvale BART station as well as the compartmentalization of the protesters bitching about the NYE shooting at that very station.
