Maintenance Yards

Does anyone know where I can get a list of the maintenance yards that service BART? I've tried the website but can't seem to locate them...

Riding the system, you'll

Riding the system, you'll note on the center window pillar a sticker identifying the "home base" of that particular car's maintenance yard. Each line has a yard except the extension out to Dublin. Announcements are made when a train goes out of service at Richmond. The Concord yard is between Pleasant Hill and Concord Stations, the Hayward Yard (still active?) between South Hayward and Union City and on the SF side, Colma Station/yard. Many years ago, there was talk of a super maintenance yard at or near Livermore at the base of the Altamount Pass.

Colma Yard, also known as

Colma Yard, also known as Daly City Yard. Richmond is the busiest yard with a fleet size of 220 cars (possibly more now), responsible for about 33% of the total dispatches. "While the primary function of the yard and shop is to receive and dispatch revenue ready vehicles from and to the mainline, support operations include, vehicle maintenance, vehicle cleaning, track maintenance, train control maintenance, grounds keeping and administrative support." * You might also Google each yard and see what the results are. Also, check out Google Earth and you can get a very good visual of the layout of the yard, size and different areas to and from the yards.

Last I heard (and maybe someone can correct me) much of the work has transferred out of Hayward Yard. Cars are still being modded there, as far as I know. Trains are still stored there for morning dispatches and laid up there at night. But after the fire much of the work and fleeted ended up layout up elsewhere in the system. Rumor has it there could be some sort of yard with the Warm Springs extension.

Richmond has never been the

Richmond has never been the busiest yard, Concord yard handles about 20% more cars and runs more train hours than Richmond by about 33%.

Ah thanks for the

Ah thanks for the clarification. I did not really look at that link I provided in depth to see what the date of it was.

I disagree here. You have to

I disagree here. You have to remember that Richmond not only serves as a yard, but it is also a TM zone for two lines. There are times during the day where Concord may not even receive a train for a few hours let alone process one.

Every twenty minutes Richmond yard receives and dispatches at least 4 trains. There are trains constantly going in and out of there. Richmond is also responsible for processing trains for three lines now that Hayward yard does not.

So I would say that "The Rich" is the heaviest yard in the system.

If they're so heavy, what did

If they're so heavy, what did we just send about a dozen of our cars there for PM's? they don't have enough work at the shop.

I was told that was because

I was told that was because the hot weather murdered the fleet this past weekend. Car shortages on every line. Concord yard is full of bad orders, and cars hsd to be sent to Richmond to help you guys out, and get cars back out on the line.

I don't know how you say Richmond doesn't have enough work when the runaround tracks over there are constantly full.

Difference of perception I guess.

There seems to be some

There seems to be some differing opinions as to which yard is the “busiest”.
You can basically break it down into three different categories: highest number of dispatches, highest capacity, and highest number of railcars stored. As the previous poster noted Richmond Yard has a high number of dispatches because every train bound for Richmond station enters the yard after the station. As far as total railcar capacity goes, it has to be Hayward Yard. Hayward is enormous, it stretches for about a mile and at its widest point is at least 18 tracks wide plus the two mainline tracks. In addition to the main yard it has a small yard to the south used to stage train sets. It has tracks to the east of the mainline used to store gravel hopper cars and the LORAM track grinding train. The yard with the highest number of railcars stored is something I don’t know. Hayward is large in capacity but doesn’t seem very full of cars; Concord is not huge but appears quite full usually.
In addition to these yards BART has a few places where there have storage tracks. South of Bay Fair there are a few pocket tracks that occasionally have a train or maintenance equipment. East of Dublin/Pleasanton is storage tracks the trains use. Between 19th Street and MacArthur there is one track west of the three mainline tracks that store maintenance cars. North of North Concord is a pair of tracks that flyover the mainline used for unknown purposes. East of Pittsburg/Baypoint is storage tracks.
I have no knowledge of West Bay facilities or operations.
