Parking fee collection to change Monday at lot at BART Dublin-Pleasanton station

BART riders who park cars in one of the big lots around the Dublin-Pleasanton station will start paying parking fees differently Monday — to a private company rather than to the public transit agency.

The parking fee is still $1 per vehicle. But as of Monday, drivers must pay the parking fee to collection machines installed at the south end of the 800-space parking area near the station plaza. And they must pay it on the weekends, too.

The privately owned lot on the Dublin, or north side, of the station is located just north of a BART parking garage adjacent to Interstate 580.

Up to now, train riders using the lot have paid their fees to machines located inside the train station, or they used BART's EZ Rider card to buy reserved parking permits in advance.

Neither method will work anymore.

Those with parking permits will be required to use reserved parking areas inside the BART-owned parking garage.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said that the parking lot owner — AvalonBay Communities — is exercising its right to take control of the property, where the company plans to build a housing project some day in a deal approved by the transit system.

"This is not a BART lot. The developer effectively has been loaning the property to BART, giving us extra parking there temporarily," Johnson said. "This is a reminder that the lot won't be used for parking permanently."

the lot to remember their stall number because it must be entered into the payment machines.

In another change, the commercial parking lot operator will collect fees seven days a week, unlike BART, which does not collect parking fees on Saturdays and Sundays.

Johnson said the AvalonBay Communities hasn't determined when it will close the parking lot to develop houses there.

While Dublin-Pleasanton station users will eventually lose access to the 800-space parking lot, Johnson said BART will add 1,200 spaces at the West Dublin station when it opens. The West Dublin station was supposed to open last year but has been delayed by welding problems, Johnson said.

I wonder if this is part of

I wonder if this is part of the reason they closed the PHill surface lot and built a garage. Those monstrosities are being built by AvalonBay as well I think.

I'm all for housing close to transit, but that is just ridiculous. Maybe it will be better when the scaffolding is down, but the condos are so close to the street it wiped out a lot of the open space that used to be there. At least the other apartment complexes around there are set back with some green space out front.

Why are developers still building anyway? Last I checked the housing boom was a bust...

"Open space" LOL, that was

"Open space" LOL, that was such a 1990's theme. The new buzzword is "high density development". Aka, build as tight and high as possible in what used to be "open space".

And, of course, it's not

And, of course, it's not working well. See today's link on the frustration. I agree LInton should be replaced. He's full of shit and we've had enough.
