Embarcadero Escalator

Does anyone know what the deal is with the northwest Embarcadero station escalator -- the one that goes up to the cable car turnaround outside the Hyatt? It has been out of service for a couple of months now, and it is collecting trash and leaves. Over the past few years, it seems to be out of service about 1/3 of the time, but never for this long. I don't mind taking the stairs myself, but when you get one person who is struggling to make it up the stairs, it really creates a backup, especially in the AM commute. Plus, you have to go up single file because there is always someone struggling down the stairs on the left with a huge suitcase.

The ultimate irony is that next to defunct escalator, there is an old sign that says "Your fare dollars are keeping us moving" or something like that, and touting the "new" escalator.
