YOUR BAG DOES NOT GET ITS OWN SEAT

This morning I was on a totally packed 10-car train heading into SF during the rush hour (like usual), and this cow decided that her purse needed the seat next to her more than any of the dozens of people standing in the train, crammed in like sardines in a stinky can covered with fecal matter.

How do you know it wasn't a broken seat? I was next to a broken seat this morning, but it wasn't obvious until I nearly sat on it myself.
She had her bag and papers
She had her bag and papers piled on it, and was reading some binder she had in the seat.
Another passenger immediately went and sat on the seat once she finally lumbered off the train.

This is a big problem. I see this all the time. MANY offenders. One would think they purchased two tickets or something. Standing room only and they won't move their backpacks and luggage. I was on a morning train that was packed the other day and one woman was sprawled out over two seats just passed out cold. I guess everyone else figured she needed the rest.
Anyway, it bothers me that passengers don't exercise common courtesy by allowing others to sit down by moving their backpacks, bags and luggage. Many people have worked long shifts and are tired, some are elderly, but it doesn't matter, they won't budge.
Besides this, my co-worker's daughter was attacked at 19th Street and they tried to drag her off the train. She wasn't by herself either. Exercise caution when riding BART with your cell phone, etc.
Love those gross seats in your picture. YUCK!
I've seen assertive
I've seen assertive passengers simply step in and ask "is this yours?" The assumption is, if "yes" - move it, if not - it's moved to the floor as abandoned.
I always ask: "Mind if I sit
I always ask: "Mind if I sit down?" which 80% of the time is fine. The other 20%, the person is looking at their cellphone or just gives a dirty look and ignores so I just move on or stand. When it is a crowded train, the "ignore" thing isn't cool. If it isn't a crowded, I try to find a seat that isn't occupied by a bag.
I saw someone ask her, and
I saw someone ask her, and she just shot them a nasty look and ignored them. She was blocking the seat with her bulk -- too fat for someone to step around.
