Train Operator reports "Double-Dash" to Central
What does this mean?
I frequently hear on the radio the Train Operators reporting "Double Dash" on their cab display. Central takes in the message and issues an instruction something like "Run Manual on the XX-Track to XX."
I'm assuming a Double-Dash report means the Train lost its automatic speed code?
What does Run Manual mean? Does that mean they are limited to 25 mph? By running manual, does it mean that Central would be able to issue an ATO code sometime down the line when the system resets?
Thanks.

If the train is unable to get speed codes, instead of just showing zero the display is double dashes.
Then the train operator switches to manual mode which means the maximum speed they can go was 25.
Usually you will hear central say something to continue with road manual until they get good codes and then switch back to automatic. If you watch their display you actually see the codes come up. Switch something and then the train will take off.
Hi Masters. Thank you for
Hi Masters. Thank you for the info. Are you a TO?
Why do you need to know? If
Why do you need to know? If you're interested in how to make a train go and stop, then Google BART. If you are a train buff, talk to an employee. I dont think this is an appropriate place to find out how to operate a train, or learn about access to trackway facilities. It is not a big secret but please ask your questions in the light of day, show your face, and voice your intent in person. This is a comment web site, and some specifics and procedures should remain vague in description here. NOBODY wanted to know how to fly an airplane unless that person was interested in becoming a pilot, right? Not being paranoid, just careful with certain information.
Flying a plane.. Trim
Flying a plane..
Trim properly.. Set flaps..
Apply throttle, pull back at proper speed.. Maintain speed to get out of the ground affect..
Jonnywad, what's the problem?
Jonnywad, what's the problem? It's not like the question about train operation is clogging up all the thousands of posts in this forum. I, for one, am interested in the question and the answer. Thanks for asking!
Untwist your panties man,
Untwist your panties man, it's the Internet, no one uses their real name. If the lingo was broadcast over an open radio channel, as you said, it's not a big secret. He had a pretty good handle on what was happening already. On another note, if you're that concerned you should be scolding the person who answered the question, not the one asking it. Security starts at home.
I agree! I am a train
I agree! I am a train operator as are a few people on this site. Its kind of unnerving when people ask specific questions about how the train runs or info on trackways. In all honestly ...it sounds like something a terrorist would what to know!
