HUMAN WASTE Shuts Down BART Excalators

bartarded's picture

You read that headline right.

When work crews pulled open a broken escalator in BART's Civic Center Station last month they found so much human s*** gumming up the gears that they had to call in a full haz-mat team.

Only stations that this is

Only stations that this is happening are at ones where the poor station design allows the escalators to be OUTSIDE the gates that secure the stations at the end of revenue. If the escalators were not accessable to the homeless during the hours that the stations are closed, this wouldn't be an issue.

Another exmple of poor station design biting BART in the *ss.

They need to build

They need to build above-ground enclosures on those stations to protect the escalator areas, and raise the height of the fencing around the fare area to make it harder for people to fare evade by simply hopping over a 3 foot high fence.

Station entrance enclosures

Station entrance enclosures have been bantered about for years. The enclosures would save BART a lot of money in escalator repairs and slip and fall claims. Unfortunately, the BIGGEST opponents to the enclosures, especially those between Embarcadero to Civic Center station are the merchants. Merchants object because any design will block views of their respective stores. The only street level enclosures on the BART system are located at the Lake Merritt BART station and there is only one escalator enclosure. Get a buy-in by the merchants at SF Chamber of Commerce and things will happen.

Tons of East Bay stations

Tons of East Bay stations have ground level enclosures. Everywhere that there are elevated tracks. Also Downtown & North Berkeley stations are both underground & have street level enclosures.

It's only underground

It's only underground stations that are an issue. Downtown Berkeley's main entrance has a street-level enclosure, but the 3 other entrances have full access to the bottom of the stairs. No escalators in those, but plenty of bad smells in the stairwells.

Civic center is hopeless,

Civic center is hopeless, outside or inside. I see someone taking a hot shit out in the open every month or so. Cold shit is a daily thing. You just learn to watch where you step. The transients living near the station, in that whole area, just don't care.

Welcome to San Francisco!

Welcome to San Francisco! They're at Civic Center for a reason... Government there loves them.. Transients from thousands of miles come to SF to enjoy the taxpayers gifts, public funded programs, and other hugs..

A place where even if you have no rights to something, you somehow have rights.. A place where some people believe that people should live stacked on top of each other and ride a bike around town. Instead of having a home with land, grass and a white picket fence.

Yeah. If I was getting out at

Yeah. If I was getting out at a different station I might not hate BART so much, but whenever I take it I get onto a filthy car and then get out right in the middle of the open sewer of Civic Center.

The only station that's worse is maybe 16th & Mission?

You know what though? That's

You know what though? That's San Francisco's issue not BART's. BART isn't the one enabling and encouraging homelessness.

Are there any photos of the

Are there any photos of the offending extrement?

It looks like poo.

It looks like poo.

It's hard to tell the bart

It's hard to tell the bart employees from the transients they all look the same....

If the police aren't even

If the police aren't even allowed to shoot someone throwing knives at them, what is a regular rank-and-file employee expected to do?

If a station agent or janitor confronted a homeless person, it's the agent or janitor who would be disciplined and possibly fired and sent off to "sensitivity training".

Well, absolutely. But You see

Well, absolutely. But You see both sides are a problem even if police has permits for shoot at sight or the permits are not granted. People don't behave responsibly in power and when responsible they ask for extrapower.
