BartRAGE Updates?

Alright folks, I’ve been watching the way things have been going here on BartRAGE lately and it’s nice to see some fresh faces again. However, along with that I’ve noticed that more and more the blog format of this site doesn’t reflect the way it is used.

BartRAGE hasn’t changed much over the years, but the Internet sure has. Likes and in-comment images in particular are everywhere except here. Also, despite what some people (ahem) may think, I don’t really like being the sole ban-hammer around here, and I would like to see a more community based moderation system with more transparency. And I’d REALLY like to see it in place before the next major incident/union negotiation/political nightmare comes through.

The solution I’m proposing is to move BartRAGE onto a site called Reddit, which acts as a platform for threaded discussion. I think the features of that site are more in-line with the way discussions flow on BartRAGE, and there is potential to link to other Bay Area and transit-oriented sub-reddits and expand our user base. There are also a lot of really good technical reasons to move, but that doesn’t really matter to you guys, except to know that I had a little talk with Admin, and they are fine with moving the site. The main drawback is that no old content will transfer to the new site, so in order to refer to old content we’ll have to link back to the old site.

I have already reserved the BartRAGE subreddit and posted a link as an example. You can find it at http://www.reddit.com/r/bartrage. If you want to make posts and play with the format, go for it. However, if we are going to move the forums there, ultimately there will need to be a transition where the old boards are archived and not available for posting anymore, and the BartRAGE domain will be somehow linked to the sub-reddit.

TL;DR: I think it would be a good idea to move BartRAGE to a forum instead of a blog, and I'm willing to do the work. What do you think?

Thumbs up.. It would make it more professional with more legit conversations. Maybe less trolls..

I'm open to suggestions if you can think of a better one, but I don't have the technical knowledge to set up a stand-alone message board. I picked Reddit because it's easy, and takes all the registration and spam filtering out of the picture. That, and I think the upvote/downvote system would work well.

For alternatives to reddit, check out www.proboards.com and www.forumotion.com

Those will give you a format / layout that is like a lot of the online forums that use vbulletin, one of the most popular, but not free.

Seems like a decent idea--the threads here are a little hard to track. I don't object to reddit, but maybe also check out nabble.com or groups.google.com?

Thanks for the input so far. I still think it's a good idea, but after thinking on it I'm hesitant to change to a completely different web platform. There seems to be a nice influx of people right now, and I don't want to drive anyone away. Also, I really don't want to lose all the back content, I enjoy making fun of people who post on threads from 2009.

Whenever I get access to more administrative functions of the site, I'll see what kind of setup is being used now, maybe there is a way to modify what we already have.

Ah...2009.
I remember it well.
Hold on a second, no I don't.
