Many years ago when the Colma station was about to open, I read that they were part of the art installation at the station. Apparently, the sun is supposed to reflect off of them and create colorful patterns on the station at certain times of the day. There also used to be art sculptures hanging from the ceiling that moved in the wind created by trains. I don't know if they are still there.
