...Highway 4, between Willow Pass and San Marcos...

I've driven by this thousands of times and have been comfortable with compacency but now I'm just plain curious: There is a section of track that leads up to a trailer off of Highway 4 between Willow Pass Road and San Marcos. There are almost always cars there, and sometimes trains (powered down, out of service, etc.).

So...what is that area? Who sits in the trailer?

C75 - north concord training

C75 - north concord training facility. or so it says on the gate at the entrance on panoramic drive (adjacent the north concord station). it's where T/Os are made using a special recipe perfected over the years. or so i've come to believe.

it originally served as the tailtracks for north concord when that station served as the terminal on the C-line; the PAX (the extension to bay point) was opened in two phases, with north concord opening in december 1995 and everyone's favorite pittsburg/bay point opening a year later. the tracks now serve as part of the training facility (with a portable serving as classroom space), but also have a dual purpose as storage tracks.

this facility has come up before on this site, and i'm sure a more knowledgeable person (e.g., a T/O) would be able to provide a more detailed answer.

but i'm sure you'd really be tantalized by the story of the fourth track through downtown oakland, hidden behind the walls of platform 2 at 12th and 19th streets (think of lexington-63rd st station in manhattan). oops, i said too much. besides, that's a subject for another thread!

Speaking of phantom tracks,

Speaking of phantom tracks, there was a long held rumor of a skeleton of a station at SFO that was built into one of the newer terminals, but later filled in with sand. Oh, the subject of another thread.
