Bay Area Police Prepare For The Worst After Mehserle Verdict

OAKLAND, Calif. -- On Thursday, a Bay Area anarchist group promised action when the verdict comes down in the murder trial of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle.
Oakland police said they'll be ready no matter what sort of trouble breaks out on the street. On Friday they'll begin training for possible civil unrest that could arise after the verdict is announced.
Law enforcement officers will be coming to West Oakland from across the Bay Area to get ready for the possibility of a repeat of the rioting early January of last year in response to the killing of Oscar Grant.

That lone black juror
That lone black juror couldn't be relocated fast enough to North Dakota when the verdict comes back as not guilty. . .
Seriously, remember the prosecution and defense agreed to the make-up of the jury pool. The race of a potential juror should not be a prerequiste for a decision. It is the presentation of evidence to support the charge that a jury must consider.
This particular case included a comprehensive and probing jury questionnaire that both parties stipulated as to its contents, scope and reach. Each of the respondents answers were probably weighed on a scale and quite likely, potential black jurors in statistical jargon, "fell off the scale." The black juror candidate either intentionally or unintentionally removed themselves out of jury service for the year. Just consider the intense pressure from certain elements of the black community and anarchist groups to pass judgement before the trial. A case in point in the train operator who testified the "fight was no big deal." At least that's my opinion.

I'm aware of the process and you are correct. That being said, I still think it will be
a mitigating factor if the conviction isn't to the liking of some Oakland residents.
Previous incidents indicate not much provocation is required for urban violence.
One way to fix the problem
One way to fix the problem would be a "shall issue" concealed carry law at the Federal level. The decision of McDonald v. Chicago might give us that and it might not but either way something like it is coming down the pike in the next five years. Sacramento can't stop it. It's Federal.
I'm willing to bet BART
I'm willing to bet BART management has done no preparation at all in the event of more riots. I retired shortly after the last riots and, on the second day, BART *CONSULTANTS* were evacuated from the administrative offices, but employees were not. I've asked a couple people I stay in touch with if they've heard of any contingency planning and none of them have.
The uber-P.C. Board wouldn't even allow security at its own meetings and the G.M. was attacked with paint (thankfully nothing worse!).
If you own a car and work in Oakland, I would STRONGLY suggest driving to work the day the verdict comes down and NOT taking BART.

I'd take a step further and say that if you even have PASS THROUGH Oakland to skip
Bart in the event of an "unfavorable" verdict. If the rioters manage to shut down
an Oakland station no one is going anywhere.

Look, first - you don't need to be black to find a verdict and those of you who imply that lack of black affects the verdict - THAT's the most racist thing about the WHOLE THING. Oscar was fighting on public transit, and was resisting. Why else would an outnumbered cop shoot? Doesn't mean it was right, but it doesn't take a black man to figure that out. If you don't think a non-black can handle that decision, than move away from the US. Don't like the way cops act when you fight on public transporation at 2 a.m.? Vote for a mayor who cares as little as you do for the same city you tear up.
Saddest part - WHEN bart pays the $20,000,000.00, guess who really will pay? EVERYONE. Money can't bring oscar back, so why should I pay for some family to go to vegas?
