Richmond-Fremont Line Train Length
DO YOU RIDE THE RICHMOND-FREMONT LINE REGULARLY? I'd like to hear from folks on the Richmond-Fremont line regarding train length. I have ridden that line for many years, in both directions, and all times of day or night. There is no doubt that the line is UNSAFE DUE TO OVERCROWDING during peak-hours and this forum is a space to discuss the reality of this... despite BART's repeated ignoring of customer complaints on this issue.

Dangerously Short
Dangerously Short Richmond-Fremont Peak-Time Trains
BART's PR mouthpieces state that they compute train-length based on the most crowded point of a train's run. I call bullshit on that. The reality I experience daily is this:
6-car northbound trains during morning rush-hour which are SRO by San Leandro and at dangerous crush-level between Fruitvale and 12th Street. This is what I observe daily. The scenario repeats itself southbound in the afternoon/evening rush-hour.
Am I imagining this? As a person who has regularly commuted by BART for 20 years, I was shocked when I moved from the Walnut Creek area to San Leandro. It's like two different systems in terms of train-length and system support. Whenever I attempt to discuss issues of train-length and dangerous crowding with folks at BART and I tell them that my issue occurs along the Richmond-Fremont line, it's like they totally zone out. Economic racism? Conspiracy of denial? Fatigue at hearing about an issue which they have no intention of solving? All of the above?
What do other folks experience along this line?
And what do folks experience when they attempt to address the issue with BART?
You are 100% correct. I
You are 100% correct. I board the SF train @ Castro Valley @ 6:12am. If I were to transfer to the Richmond train @ Bayfair it is only
THREE cars; I stay on the SF train until Lake Merritt and only have to endure 2 stations on this cattle car before I transfer to the 5
car Pittsburg train @ 19th.
Coming home is even worse. The Fremont train I catch @ MacArthur is sold out @ 19th and a complete sardine can by 12th. Things
start to clear out by San Leandro but the downtown Oakland crowding is unacceptable. This has been going on for YEARS and I am
positive nobody will ever do a thing about it.
Sad but true-- despite those
Sad but true-- despite those bitches breaking ridership records and making money hand over fist with increased fees
Hmm.. Your argument is
Hmm.. Your argument is invalid.. If they increased the fares, they'd have more money to put into the system AND there would be some extra space due to a few less riders because of the higher fares..
There is a capacity issue due to the lack of 1960's era train cars. So the real problem is that BARTs to cheap and they don't have the fleet to carry them. Won't be for another few years to get new train cars.
The best way to free things up would be to raise fares. Doing so should slightly reduce the number of riders while maintaining the same income. And you might lose some of the 'less desirables' on the train.
It would still be cheaper than driving, driving and bridge costs have gone up more than the CPI, BART has not kept up with CPI.
don't complain about cars
don't complain about cars being too crowded until u visit any other international mass transit systems. in japan they have people whose job it is just to push people into the cars during rush hour.
